It works fine with Debian/testing for me using POSIX and en_US.UTF-8 locales...

To reproduce this, perhaps we need additional information:

a) output of "lynx -version" for old/new lynx's

b) locale settings

c) customizations (if any) for lynx.cfg and .lynxrc
