Odd.  When I try to view the source I see:
application/xml D)ownload, or C)ancel

I get the same result when viewing a local xml file.
I'm running lynx 2.8.8dev.5
Debian version 6.0.2

my $HOME/.mime.types has

text/html       xml

which is probably relevant

however, commenting that out doesn't change the behavior.  I was using
Debian 5.0 and my own build of lynx.  But Debian testing (6.something)
gives me the source also...
