OK. I purged mime-support, removed /etc/mailcap, reinstalled
mime-support, and /etc/mailcap is the same as before, so that
wasn’t it.

I do have some KDE stuff installed, but use IceWM; I only
start single KDE applications like kontact when needed,
and do not run any “desktop environment”.

I think this is the actual bug – lynx ought to honour the
user’s settings. I am still puzzled that lynx has anything
to do with a “mail”cap file. This is totally illogical,
unexpected, and whatnot.

Maybe, but that doesn’t change the fact that I installed
xloadimage and am using it (from the command line and
from midnight commander) with great success.
