I just tried with slang (and 2.8.8dev.10) and see the older behavior:

Lynx Version 2.8.9dev.12 (24 Nov 2016)
libwww-FM 2.14, SSL-MM 1.4.1, OpenSSL 1.0.1t, s-lang 2.2.4
Built on linux-gnu (Jan  1 2017 21:35:11).
