Oh, _I_ see.  I've been misunderstanding the key merkle trie problem
all along.  (I thought the problem was with updating the merkle trie
for keys newly received, not for keys that are old, but only later
became relevant.)  Well, that would explain it, and I've added a test
for the real problem now locally ;-).  (Will sync tomorrow or so when
my laptop has connectivity again.)
