Bruce's analysis is correct; no released version of monotone ever
created such vars, but when they were first being developed they did
switch encodings, and I didn't bother adding 'db migrate' support for
it. They're harmless and can just be ignored; or if they bug you, you
can use "monotone unset". (If you can't figure out how to type them,
I guess you can also just say 'monotone db execute "delete from
db_vars"', and they'll be recreated as you work; db vars are not very
valuable.)
