make CXXFLAGS="-O2 -fno-strict-aliasing \

did the trick for me (it excludes the deprecated code without changing
any header).

PS: What did not work was to use g++-3.4 for monotone-command.o only.
The reason remains in darkness (the compilers are supposed to be binary
compatible). Using 3.4 for everything works.
