0.2 seconds may not be a big deal, but ... for a Pidgin monotone
database (im.pidgin.* from pidgin.im), the difference is more like 2.75
seconds, with a hot cache.  0.36 lists the database in 120ms, whereas
0.38 takes 2850-2900ms.  This *is* a bit annoying.  Fortunately, 'ls
branches' is an infrequent-enough operation that I have not really
worried about it too much in terms of a real impact on productivity.
