Um, wow ... you used dialup for _how_ long? :-)

But seriously ... I am 99% sure that the issue is that Verizon, like
most ISP's nowadays, block outgoing port 25.  Can you use telnet or the
like to try to connect to your mail server's port 25?  I bet it will
fail to connect.

Assuming you have a new enough nmh, and your mail server listens on the
mail submission port, you can put this in your .mh_profile:

send:           -port submission
