Well, yeah, but I use them.

I see your point but don't feel strongly about it.  It looks like it was
intentional, and has been that way for nearly 27 years (though the
error message changed along the way):

when edit fails, delete draft by renaming to m_backup(draft)
----------------------------

Should be easy to fix if you want.
