I should also note a couple more bits of evidence supporting the explanation I
suggested below. First, the problem doesn't appear with the fltk graphics
toolkit. Second, reversing the plot order of the "main" plot and the
pseudo-colorbar in my gnuplot example is another way to fix the problem in
that example (instead of using "set size nosquare").
