Follow-up Comment #4, bug #56062 (project octave):

In Octave you can always use 'help XXX' to get help on a particular function. 
This is 'help cbrt'


octave:1> help cbrt
'cbrt' is a built-in function from the file libinterp/corefcn/mappers.cc

 -- cbrt (X)
     Compute the real cube root of each element of X.

     Unlike 'X^(1/3)', the result will be negative if X is negative.

     See also: nthroot.


cbrt always returns the real root as you noted.
