Follow-up Comment #3, bug #56158 (project octave):
Now I see a part of the problem. The modification star disappears (only) when
the complete file name is shown.
I have no explanation for the other issues. The dynamic handling of the close
buttons and of scrolling the tabs is not done by octave.
