Did you unmute them? Things are muted by default.
Yea, I forgot to mention, but I issued the two following commands:
amixer set Master 100 unmute
amixer set PCM 100 unmute
to get /dev/dsp to work you need to have the snd-pcm-oss module loaded.
I decided to give that a shot:
# modprobe snd-pcm-oss
lsmod returns
...
snd-pcm-oss 40196 0 (unused)
...
but `cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp` still plays nothing
what does dmesg give?
this is with /etc/init.d/alsasound stop (and then subsequent start):
