Can you launch a manual ssh connection from your mac and do a rdiff-backup 
--version.

i.e. From my cygwin shell:

$ ssh david            (david is my Linux box)
address@hidden's password:
Last login: Fri Apr 11 11:55:21 2003 from 10.0.0.157
Have a lot of fun...
address@hidden:~> rdiff-backup --version
rdiff-backup 0.11.3
address@hidden:~>

I use the above to ensure I have the very basic setup in place.
