Well, the thing is that I do a chmod -R u+rwX before the sync, so that
won't change anything: the evil files are created by rdiff itself. It
creates a non-writable directory, and then tries to write into it and
dies lamely.
Of course, I can't to the chmod *after* the sync broke because it starts
from scratch.
