[ruby-tut] Ruby Tutorial question: what is a Terminal?

Hi,

 

   I've been trying to learn Ruby since two days and now understand the very basic things, thanks to your tutorial (although I've been reading the french traduction)

 

My question is, at the start of the tutorial, they asks us to open a Terminal, which I do not understand what it is. I've been following the tutorial directly from Interactive Ruby Shell although in the tutorial they seem to open IRB from the Terminal.

Is this Terminal a program and if so, where could I get it?
