Thank you for offering help!

If you want to help GNU projects (e.g. awk/sed/tar/coreutils etc.),
I'd suggest finding a project that interests you, and then offering help in the
project's mailing list.

list of GNU Projects: http://www.gnu.org/software/
Non-exhuastive list of ‘help wanted’: https://savannah.gnu.org/people/
Helping the GNU projects: http://www.gnu.org/help/help.html
High Priority projects: http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/priority-projects/

A short tutorial about how to start helping a GNU project (written
specifically for GNU Coreutils, but relevant to most other GNU projects):
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/coreutils.git/tree/HACKING

Most projects have a mailing list - you can write to the mailing list and ask
what is the best way to contribute.
For example, if you’re interested in helping the “FreeDink” role-playing
game, the GNU Savannah website lists the address of the FreeDink mailing list
here:
  https://savannah.gnu.org/mail/?group=freedink
(Despite the mailing list having ‘bug-‘ in its name, it can be used for
general queries).

If you're interested in contributing to the GNU Savannah website (i.e. the code
behind http://sv.gnu.org),
then a good place to start are these links:
   http://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/RunningSavaneLocally/
   http://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/SavaneInABox/
Once you are able to run the GNU Savannah front-end PHP code locally on your computer, you can start hacking.

One possible topic to address is the current "Mark-Up" rendering, which has
been discussed lately.
Fixing the mentioned bug, or implementing a "preview" feature would be terrific.
