This should be possible if you write a backtick that prints only if CPU > 90; then you could combine that with %? : 

%?%1`%{.R.}%?% 

to conditionally change the color

I tried first using bash colour escape codes, and then normal screen
colour codes like %{b .r.}, but it prints the codes verbatim rather than
as colour codes.
