Noooo...

The trick here is to convert your ADIF file to xlog first. So use import.. 
select ADIF.. save it and now it is in xlog format. Use the log editor to 
remove empty columns. Now you can use merge to merge with another xlog file.

So merge only works on native xlog files..

Does that make any sense to you?
