Hi Ed,

To make a more readable patch :
You can use the "cvs-utils" scripts and this cvs configuration file :

(0)% cat .cvsrc
cvs -z9
diff -u -N
update -P -d
checkout -P

All this options are always apply to your cvs commands.
diff -u is to have a unidiff output (with + and -, instead of > and <) and -N 
it is for new files.

If you want to add some files, you must use :
(1) cvs add file1 file2 ...
(2) cvsdiff Changelog file1 file2 .... (and others diff files) (cvsdiff not 
cvs diff, it is a cvs-utils script)
(3) You can mail the output of (2)

(4) clcommit
