![]() England is a family with the wrong members in
control. England has got to assume its real shape.
However horrible this system may seem to us, IT
WORKS. England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectualsare ashamed of
their own nationality. But the Labour Partys history andbackground made this
impossible.
Thirty years ago the Blimp class was already losing
its vitality.
And these inturn call into being a professional
class of doctors, lawyers, teachers, artists, etc. And they WILL suffer them, almost
indefinitely, providedthat they know what they are fighting for.
It does not seem probable that air bombing can
settle a major war.
The initiative will have to comefrom below. There
are every day fewer people who wish them tocontinue. There are every day fewer
people who wish them tocontinue. In thegeneral patriotism of the country they form a
sort of island of dissidentthought. Like theFrench Communists, they might become the
half-conscious agents ofmillionaires. With thegeneral public the proper approach
would be Lets call it a draw.
One can only consider it if one alsoconsiders in
what way England might be defeated.
Clearly you cant have MANY bombing planes without
lowering the nationalstandard of life.
It is not worth losing a battle in order tobury a
corpse. The working class will have to sufferterrible things.
The British working class are now betteroff in
almost all ways than they were thirty years ago.
And if the rich squeal audibly,so much the better.
And it was something similar that happenedon the fields of Norway and of Flanders.
But it cannot arisewhen we have once introduced a reasonable degree of social
justice.
Thelady in the Rolls-Royce car is more damaging to
morale than a fleet ofGoerings bombing planes. With thegeneral public the proper
approach would be Lets call it a draw. The British ruling class were not altogether
wrong in thinking thatFascism was on their side. It does not seem probable that air
bombing can settle a major war.
Socialism aims, ultimately, at a world-stateof free
and equal human beings. It isimportant not to misunderstand their motives, or one
cannot predict theiractions.
It is quite likely that this war will last three
years.
England is a country in which property and
financial power areconcentrated in very few hands. It is obvious that this
preposterous conventioncannot continue. Necessarily so, because society as it was
constituted had no room forhim.
And if the rich squeal audibly,so much the
better.
The lords of property simply sat on their bottoms
and proclaimedthat all was for the best. Internally, Germany has a good deal in
common with aSocialist state. Few able men went east of Suez if therewas any way of
avoiding it.
To a Labour government in power, three imperial
policies would have beenopen. Thenatural instinct of men like Simon, Hoare,
Chamberlain etc.
