I looked around and apparently I already has 2.59b installed, but not
in my path.  I tried it with that and the installation went through
ok.  Or at least the previous set of trouble went away.  I tried it on
a freshly checked-out installation, but perhaps after some changes
have been made by David&Co.

Do you want me to make any tests with the older autoconf?
