Hi David,

thank you for pointing me to the problematic file:line:error style
messages. I changed that, and now it works.

would anybody have some advise with the problem below?

Remember to cover the basics. Including a minimal LaTeX example
file exhibiting the problem might help.

Emacs : GNU Emacs 21.2.1 (i686-pc-cygwin, X toolkit)

Very old Emacs.

Package: 11.81

Run buffer contents:

Running `Preview-LaTeX' on `circ' with ``latex -ini "&latex" prv_circ.ini
"\nonstopmode\nofiles\PassOptionsToPackage{active,tightpage,auctex}{preview}\AtBeginDocument{\ifx\ifPreview\undefined\RequirePackage[displaymath,floats,graphics,textmath,sections,footnotes]{preview}[2004/11/05]\fi}\input{circ.tex}"''

AUCTeX (and preview-latex) can't deal with file:line:error style
messages.

Configure them off for now.

METAFONT runs may confuse the parsing. Rerunning preview-latex might
help. Not that this is relevant here.

Now this is interesting. I never ever considered using file:line:
error style messages since we would lose the character-exact context
in the file. However, it appears like the context is all there, and
we only get _additional_ information.

We probably should teach AUCTeX and preview-latex how to parse this:
after all, it the information that is the least robust to get.

Copying to the developer list and directing followups there.

I am afraid that with the current version, all you can do is edit your
texmf.cnf file (or whatever equivalent your TeX system is using) and
disable file:line: style error messages.
