Hi, I found in the man page of PDFTeX the following:

        -output-format format
Set the output format mode, where format must be either
pdf or dvi. This also influences the set of graphics
                formats understood by pdfTeX.

This more or less is the only compelling reason I see for calling TeX
and/or LaTeX with "\input{...}" instead of the file name directly. If
we can get read of this, AUCTeX should be able to work reasonably well
as a TeX shell for file names including spaces.

It would basically affect only systems with
TeX-DVI-via-PDFTeX
set to t. Can those that use it report whether their PDFTeX has the
-output-format switch?
