OK. Thanks for clearing this up. I obviously overlooked some things.

I'm not very familiar with TeX, either, and in some ways, it seems that
AUCTeX development has been stalled in this direction, because most
people use LaTeX, and TeX has in some ways a weird syntax, because you
can modify things with \catcode, that makes things difficult for regular
expressions and parsing.
