If I got it right, "xdg-open" is the equivalent on GNU/Linux systems
and there is a "xdg-open" entry in `TeX-view-program-list-builtin'.
Yet, there are different entries for each supported viewer. The main
point for having a specific entry for each viewer is that they take
different arguments to start forward/inverse search.

Does "start" take arguments to be passed to the actual program?
"xdg-open" doesn't (at least it isn't documented and I can't make it
work), so it wouldn't be possible to use "xdg-open" as a place-holder
for any viewer on GNU/Linux.
