Thanks for your response.  Regarding this part, we are on the safe side.

Are you referring to the issue when `\usepackage{showlabels}' is given?
For me, this is not a showstopper.  Have a look further below for this
answer http://tex.stackexchange.com/a/20834/76063 and the comments.

Even longtable manual says:

    8 Verbatim highlights from Table 1
    address@hidden||address@hidden
      KILLED & LINE!!!! \kill
      \caption[An optional table caption ...]{A long table\label{long}}\\

Actually, I wanted to avoid this version as well and stick to what is
recommended in the manual.
