Ah, okay, I understand.
In the very, very few times that I've written a program that cared about
exit status other than zero or non-zero, I've written my own error
reporting routines. I don't have any idea why you'd care for automake or
autoconf, but if you do mandate particular exit statuses, die isn't the
best tool.
