I would say that the right thing here is to complain loudly, since
TeX won't accept it.
I might be responsible for these tabs: for a while I have tried the
new Emacs mode that clears spaces. Unfortunately, this stupid and
dangerous mode, once activated, no matter the mode of the buffer,
normalises leading spaces and spaces in the medium of the lines (in
addition to killing trailing blanks).
As a nice result, I killed a couple of [ \t] in Autoconf code (with
\t being a literal), and probably introduced these tabs :(
Since then, I reverted to using Noah Friedman's white-space filter.
I sent a message to the Emacs folks, but I have not received any
message.
