As much as I like this, it breaks scripts using the undocumented "extrasub" variable.No, it doesn't. Only the "regular" substitutions are done with awk, there is still a bunch left that are done with sed, including but not limited to the ac_vpsub and the extrasub hack, and all output-directory- dependent variables.
Pfew. So all remains is the "I like this" bit. You should still ask Aharon Robbins whether he has problems with this (sed does provide a bootstrapping mechanism that does not require any working sed on the machine).
