Hi,
Automake 1.17 produces a warning for the use of \# here:

automake: warnings are treated as errors
Makefile.am:20: warning: escaping \# comment markers is not portable
autoreconf2.72: error: automake failed with exit status: 1
Is use within quotes also not portable?
