8 years ago, the C++ frontend of gcc was indeed far from being
perfect, but even the C++ standard was quite a moving target by that
time.
Anyway, the C frontend of gcc has been among the better players in the
compiler world for more than a decade now. Sure, there are always
hardware vendors (like Intel or Sun) that ship a compiler specific for
their platform that can create better code in some situations, but
among the universal compilers, gcc behaves pretty well.
