I can't think of any reason why an STK500/AVRISP protocol programmer wouldn't work either.
Just tested with a Prolific USB-Serial adapter (branded BAFO) -> AVRISP and AVR studio 3.56, works just fine. I would assume things would be okay with OS X also, give it a go and post the results.
