Matthias Weißer has that USBisp project documented on his homepage,
http://www.matwei.de/ .  This is an ATmega8 + FTDI FT245BM
implementing a full STK500v1 (maybe even v2 now) compatible ISP
programmer that can be controlled over USB.  Part of it is a
bootloader that talks a drastically stripped-down STK500v1 protocol so
it fits into the boot loader section of the ATmega8.  I'd guess you
could use that one almost directly.

The controller firmware for that project is GPL freeware.
