Yes, you're right, it's really the STK500 that is returning junk.

VMware itself IMHO cannot generate traces, but your host system
(Linux, I guess) could. However, for the STK500, there's an option to
trace the entire communication on the Windows side. You have to
create a registry key for that that is pointing to a log file. Please
read the appnote about the STK500 version 2 protocol, it's described
towards the end of that document.
