Details:

This patch should enable support for GNU automake 1.10 and autoconf 2.61. The
patch has following changes:

- recursive variable substitution fixed in makefile.am (@WINDOWS_DIR@)

- AC_PROG_CC macro substituted with AM_PROG_CC_O in configure.ac (as
suggested by autotools)

- bootstrap has been changed to only complain about wrong autotools instead
of exiting

N.B. This patch has not been tested with the original autotools (1.9/2.57).
It has been tested with 1.10/2.61 in Linux and OS X.
