Follow-up Comment #2, patch #7603 (project avrdude):
Ok - after pulling my hair out trying to work "inside the box", I just went
ahead and used a *double cringe* global variable for the private data on the
new programmer type. It's a single integer, and if a new method of passing
private data around comes into play, I'll adjust to use the new method.
New patch is attached.
I also fixed a few annoying things in stk500v2 (like 33 retries? What the hell
was that?).
Patch has been tested.
