Follow-up Comment #3:
I implemented a connection_type parameter that is tied to
each programmer definition in avrdude.conf. While this
information is partially redundant (e.g. you have "type =
par;", followed by "connection_type = parallel;"), it
explicitly spells out the connection type for each programmer,
centralizing the setting. The programmer implementation can
sometimes handle multiple transports, e.g. stk500v2 could be
either serial or USB by default, so I think mentioning the
connection method in avrdude.conf is the most obvious place.
