Follow-up Comment #1:
Type 3 is an FT232R which doesn't feature the MPSSE (multi-
purpose synchronous serial engine) the "avrftdi" programmer
requires.
In the SVN version, there's also a simple bit-bang programmer
("ftdi_syncbb") which could probably be made work with your
chip, but be warned that this method is _way_ slower than
the MPSSE-based FTDI programmers.
