What are you using as the actual programming hardware?
If you connect a standard STK500v2 programmer to it, it should work.
Directly bit-banging through a USB-Serial-converter (using hardware
like "ponyser" as the actual programmer) is never a good idea. Even
if it works, it's dog slow.
