Ok, so now we know that in an unspecified version of Emacs on an
unspecified operating system with unspecified locale some unspecified
input text (and I still haven't the foggiest what math mode has to do
with it), preview-latex might possibly work closer to expectations
than AUCTeX, even though vague initial descriptions of the output
buffer after the first questions appeared to tell a different story.

I can't say that I consider this conclusive evidence that the
situation is as it should be, but I don't seem to be able to elicit
more usable information.
