Enter the latex-mode and paste the following:
\begin{document}
(xxx "< " )
test 3
\end{document}
You will see that starting from "<, everything is colored in one
color. I don't know if this is intentional as < is usually not what
you want to type (as opposed to $\lt$ or so.)
Investigating this a little further, the following (more realistic)
example will also exhibit the same problem:
\begin{verbatim}
(assq-set-equal "<\\?xml " 'xml-mode 'magic-mode-alist) \end{verbatim}
test test test
If you insert a newline before \end{verbatim}, however, everything is
fine. This seems like a bug to me. Parsing goes wrong.
