What it the value of `toolbarx-image-path'?  Did you set it manually,
or did the AUCTeX (or it's configure script) set it?

AFAICS, `toolbarx-image-path' must be a list of directories, not a
single directory.  If this is correct, I'd suggest the following doc
fix:
