This is a known bug which has long been fixed.  Please try automake
1.5d, which was released yesterday.  You can get it here:

    ftp://sources.redhat.com/pub/automake/automake-1.5d.tar.bz2
    ftp://sources.redhat.com/pub/automake/automake-1.5d.tar.gz

Or you might try one of the sources mirrors, since ftp to sources
itself is severely limited.

1.5d is a prerelease; we hope to release it as 1.6 shortly.
