Given this structure:
./Makefile.am
./configure.ac
./foo/
and:

AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS = foreign
EXTRA_DIST = foo

AC_INIT(foo, 1.0)
AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR(foo)
AC_CONFIG_FILES(Makefile)
AC_OUTPUT

distcheck will fail while trying to run dist-gzip, complaining that it
can't put the relevant files into foo/. If this is an unsupported
arrangement, automake itself should probably barf on seeing the aux
dir in EXTRA_DIST.
