I dunno, that's a bit much. For this particular case, can't you
ensure that getdate.y is at least one second newer than getdate.c?
One way to do that is by checking them in separately. A bit of
a hassle, admittedly.
A simpler way is to omit getdate.c from CVS. That is what coreutils does.
Bison, diffutils and tar go even further: they don't even have
getdate.y in CVS, as they get it from gnulib in the bootstrap script.
