Odd. I don't remember having seen this before. I recommend you
first try upgrading to Automake 1.9.1 (*) and regenerate the
Makefile.in for this package since there have been at least one
portability fix in the dependency tracking code since then.
If that does not help, please send here a copy of config.log,
the offending Makefile, and its associated Makefile.in.

(*) This also requires upgrading to Autoconf 2.59.
