I'm not sure I see where is the problem.  Could you please follow the
instructions in automake-1.9.6/tests/README and send a verbose output
of the tests which failed?
(Run "make check 2>&1|tee log ; grep ^FAIL log".)

(But perhaps I'm missing something.)
