automake-1.9.6 make check failures on HP-UX 11.11

On HP-UX 11.11 with perl 5.6.1 building and testing automake-1.9.6
produced the following failures:

  make check 2>&1 | tee log
  ...lots and lots of output...and 59 minutes later...
  =====================================
  5 of 514 tests failed
  (53 tests were not run)
  Please report to address@hidden
  =====================================

  grep ^FAIL log
  FAIL: acloca17.test
  FAIL: java.test
  FAIL: missing.test
  FAIL: missing2.test
  FAIL: obsolete.test

What are the next steps needed to keep debugging these tests?  I am
not familiar with the test framework.
